Check your email regularly. If you are taking classes within the UM system, you will be expected to set up a MaineStreet account. This will require a log-in and password that are different from those used to log in to your EC portal. MaineStreet is where all of your student information for the UM system is stored. You will also log in here to access your UM email account.

In addition to setting up a MaineStreet account, you will most likely receive an email prompting you to set up a Brightspace account. Brightspace is the learning management platform that most professors use at UM. It’s their equivalent to Google Classroom, so you will need an account there.

Whether you are taking an in-person or online course, we strongly recommend that you introduce yourself to the professor before or after class. Tell them your name and let them know that you are an Early College student. If this is your first time taking an EC class, we recommend that you tell them that as well. Find out when the professor has office hours, and aim to attend those at least once in the first quarter. This is a time when you can drop by to talk with the professor about anything.

Finally, if you are taking an in-person class, we recommend that you sit near the front of the class, put your phone away during class, even if your peers have theirs out (professors notice and care), and take notes.
